Off-campus Adventures for Students with Scavenger Hunt and Movie Night

Community of Colleges Event Recaps

Kicking off the 2023-2024 YOU can be great here Community of Colleges series was our Millwork Scavenger Hunt on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. Greater Dubuque Development partnered with Travel Dubuque to offer local college students an opportunity to get off campus and experience the Historic Millwork District's unique treasures and history in a fun and interactive way. The event commenced with dinner at 7 Hills Event Center, followed by a scavenger hunt designed specifically for the students using the Goosecatch app. The scavenger hunt led students to points of interest throughout the Millwork District, learning about the history of the area and uncovering fun facts about the Dubuque and businesses in the district along the way. The hunt concluded with all participants convening in the courtyard at Gary Dolphin’s Iron Bar where prizes were awarded and students enjoying ice cream treats while socializing with one another.

On Wednesday, November 15, 2023 approximately 120 college students and young professionals attended the YOU can be great here Community of Colleges Movie Night at Phoenix Theatres. Participants were treated to a private showing of The Marvels movie with complimentary admission, popcorn, and pop. Just prior to the start of the featured film, a brief promotional video from the YOU can be great here 5-year campaign was played for audiences.

Next up in the YOU can be great here Community of Colleges series is the College Hockey Night on Friday, February 2, 2024 where area college students will have an opportunity to cheer on the Dubuque Fighting Saints at the ImOn Arena at 1800 Admiral Sheehy Drive on Dubuque's Schmitt Island. The night will include complimentary admission, pizza, refreshments, games, and networking activities. At our inaugural Community of Colleges Hockey Night this past February, we had over 320 students participate and hope to engage even more students this year. Students should look for RSVP instructions for the College Hockey Night from their student engagement offices immediately after the holiday break.

The Community of Colleges series is designed as a workforce recruitment and retention effort to connect our area college students to all that the Greater Dubuque region has to offer and provide firsthand experiences that demonstrate how YOU can be great here.
