Opportunity Dubuque Highlight: Building Construction & Construction Equipment Operator Certificate

Opportunity Dubuque, a collaborative initiative between Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) and Greater Dubuque Development, is dedicated to eliminating barriers to education and empowering individuals through training and upskilling to meet the demands of high-skilled jobs in our regional market. This transformative program not only offers free tuition, but also addresses employment obstacles by providing coaching support, transportation assistance, and child care support. This multi-pronged approach ensures that participants can successfully complete their chosen career pathway certificate and seamlessly transition into rewarding opportunities with regional employers.

One of the standout certificates offered through Opportunity Dubuque is the Building Construction & Construction Equipment Operator program, a combination of two typically separate certificate programs. Training includes both classroom instruction and hands-on learning introducing students to basic construction concepts and technical skills including rough framing, concrete, insulation, building codes and permits, and finish carpentry. Once the core tack is completed, this unique opportunity allows students to earn while they learn, with the Building Construction lab taking place on an actual job site.

During the Construction Equipment Operator lab portion, students gain essential skills to safely, efficiently, and professionally operate heavy equipment used in diverse construction settings, including residential and commercial building, road construction, maintenance, and utility installation and repair. The curriculum covers a broad spectrum of skills, including equipment applications, sustainability practices, powertrain, hydraulic and electrical system inspections, flagger skills, and the operation of forklifts, skid steers, mini-excavators, and other machinery.

This comprehensive program is designed to equip individuals for in-demand construction and trades positions with employers in the Greater Dubuque area. Enrollment through Northeast Iowa Community College for this targeted certificate program is now open with classes set to commence on March 11, 2024. Classes will be held at NICC locations in Peosta and Dubuque, IA.
