A new electrician program is coming to Northeast Iowa Community College’s (NICC) Peosta campus in January 2027, expanding access to electrical training in the Greater Dubuque region. Greater Dubuque has advocated for an electrician program in the region because of the workforce need area employers have consistently identified and further underscored in our most recent Skills Gap Analysis. NICC’s new Peosta program will extend programming currently offered at its Calmar campus, providing students and employers in the southern portion of the college district with greater access to industry-aligned instruction and hands-on training.
Students will be able to choose from two credit pathways: a 12-month Commercial-Residential Electrician diploma focused on residential and commercial wiring, safety, and National Electrical Code competency; or a two-year Industrial Electrician Associate of Applied Science degree featuring advanced training in industrial troubleshooting, motor controls, programmable logic controllers, solar technology, and more.
The program is approved by the Iowa Electrical Examining Board. Graduates who meet attendance requirements will earn 2,000 hours of credit toward the 8,000 hours required for a Class A Journeyman Electrician license.
NICC is also developing short-term, non-credit electrical training through its Business and Community Solutions division, creating additional opportunities for adult learners and incumbent workers to build electrical skills.
With Calmar cohorts beginning in August and Peosta cohorts beginning in January, the staggered schedule will also give prospective students more flexibility to enter training throughout the year.
