Employers across the Greater Dubuque region continue to identify a need for workers with strong foundational manufacturing skills. In response, Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), in partnership with regional employers, is launching a new Core Manufacturing Skills Certificate program beginning May 4.
This two-week, grant-funded course—valued at $749 and offered at no cost to participants—was developed with direct input from area manufacturers. Insights gathered through Greater Dubuque Development’s InfoAction business visits helped inform the program, which was further shaped by NICC and employers participating in the regional Manufacturing Alliance.
The result is a practical, employer-informed curriculum designed to prepare individuals for entry- and mid-level roles in manufacturing. Participants will build skills in:
The program runs May 4–14 and is scheduled in the evenings (Monday–Wednesday, 4:00–8:00 p.m. and Thursday, 3:00–8:00 p.m.), making it accessible for working adults and new hires without disrupting daytime schedules.
As a resource for employers, this program offers flexible value for employers looking to strengthen both onboarding and recruitment efforts. Employers with recent entry-level hires in their first weeks on the job can use the program to support new hire onboarding, providing a structured way to build skills quickly and reinforce a commitment to employee development. The program can also be shared with prospective candidates and community networks to collectively strengthen the regional talent pipeline. Individuals who complete the certificate gain a credible, employer-informed foundation for pursuing careers in manufacturing in the Greater Dubuque region.
