2025-2026 Annual Report Impact Story
When Tiberius and Kaitlyn arrived in the Dubuque area in April 2024, they weren’t planning to stay.
The couple had been living in Argentina and working remotely when they returned to visit family. One month became two. Then summer arrived. Their children were thriving, they found a home they loved, and what began as a temporary visit gradually became something more.
Even after purchasing a home and enrolling their children in school, the family still wasn’t certain Dubuque would be permanent.
“The key to our hearts was our kids really thriving,” said Tiberius. “They had friends, there was summer camp, there were things to do, and they felt fulfilled here.”
While their children were building connections, Tiberius’ participation in Greater Dubuque Development’s Distinctively Dubuque newcomer program in August 2025 helped the family see the community in a new light. Through the program, he connected with local leaders, learned about opportunities throughout the region, and gained a deeper understanding of the momentum shaping Dubuque’s future.
One of those connections was with Greater Dubuque’s workforce team. As he explored career opportunities in the region, those relationships provided guidance, introductions, and local insight that helped him navigate the job search process in a new community.
“You’re one of hundreds when you apply online,” he said. “But here’s somebody you can have coffee with.”
The experience gave the family confidence that they could build both personal and professional roots in Dubuque.
“That tipped us over the edge,” Tiberius said. “We were like, let’s make it home. Let’s make it home for real.”
For the Mocanus family, choosing Dubuque wasn’t about a single opportunity or experience.
It was the combination of community connections, career opportunities, and a welcoming environment that convinced them they had found the right place to build their future.
