Last year, the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque established the Better Together Committee, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders to address challenges and opportunities related to immigrant and migrant populations in the Greater Dubuque region. Nic Hockenberry, Director of Workforce Programming at Greater Dubuque Development, chairs the group's International Student Retention Subcommittee. This subcommittee is dedicated to enhancing employment and education outcomes for international students attending our local colleges and universities.
On Friday, September 6, 2024, the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, in partnership with Greater Dubuque Development and the region's Community of Colleges, hosted the inaugural International Student Retention Welcome Event at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium. The event drew 88 international students from all colleges and universities in the region—a pivotal step in integrating these talented individuals into our community and encouraging them to envision their futures in the Greater Dubuque region. Mayor Brad Cavanagh delivered a welcoming address, followed by student exploration of the museum, food trucks, live music, and an opportunity to connect in the museum's outdoor event space.
Retaining international students in our region represents a critical workforce strategy with immense potential. These students bring valuable skills, diverse perspectives, and global experiences that can play a pivotal role in strengthening our workforce. The welcome event marks the beginning of a broader initiative aimed at improving retention outcomes for international students who have already chosen the Greater Dubuque region for their education.
The next phase of this initiative will focus on educating regional employers about the untapped potential international students bring to the workforce. The International Student Retention Subcommittee will actively engage businesses, highlighting the unique workforce opportunities these students present. In spring 2025, we will encourage connections between employers and international students at the Spring AccessDubuqueJobs.com Career Fair, hosted by Greater Dubuque Development on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at the Grand River Center.
By fostering connections between international students, the community, and local businesses through our partnership with the Better Together Committee, we can retain more of these bright minds in Dubuque—ultimately enhancing both our workforce and our economy. Because YOU can be great here, we believe this initiative is a vital step in ensuring the Greater Dubuque region remains a place where talent thrives, businesses grow, and communities flourish.
We extend our thanks to the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, the National Mississippi River Museum, and Mayor Cavanagh for helping to make this event a success.
