Transporting Goods Located adjacent to the Mississippi River, Dubuque offers many industries, particularly those engaged in shipping bulk products in great volume, the advantage of barge transportation. Barges provide an important means of shipment for coal, grain, fuel, chemicals, iron, and steel.
The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains a 9-foot shipping channel in the river and manages the series of locks and dams between St. Paul and St. Louis. Eight river terminals in Dubuque and two fleeting/harbor services provide navigational assistance to the barge industry.
Visit the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District website at http://www.mvr.usace.army.mil/ for more information on Mississippi River navigation.
