Opportunity Dubuque is a nationally-recognized, collaborative job training effort developed in response to local employers’ needs for a skilled workforce. Through this initiative, individuals complete industry-driven certifications to upgrade their skills or launch their careers. A win-win for students and employers, Opportunity Dubuque builds career pathways for students to enter the workforce and continue their education and training, while filling employers’ demand for talent in high-wage, high-demand careers.
Dubuque Works funding, provided by the City of Dubuque, Mystique Casino, and the Dubuque County Board of Supervisors, helps eliminate any financial barriers by providing individuals with scholarships. From those without a high school diploma to dislocated workers, the program has provided opportunities to those who needed it most, while at the same time, strengthening local businesses.
Since 2012, Opportunity Dubuque has trained and employed hundreds of individuals in advanced manufacturing, transportation, and information technology careers. New for 2016, Opportunity Dubuque is offering additional certifications in culinary foundations, information technology, and construction and restoration.
Local employers have directly benefitted from this program as it has provides them with a pipeline of qualified talent. Chad Huntington, Vice President of Human Resources for local manufacturer A.Y. McDonald, praises the program: “We see that the skills shortage was taken seriously, addressed with a plan, and a course of action was put into place. We have already hired two graduates of the CNC certificate program and expect to hire an additional two or three. When groups come together to make things like this training program and initiative happen, we are all the better for it.”
Opportunity Dubuque Partners include Greater Dubuque Development, Northeast Iowa Community College, IowaWorks, East Central Intergovernmental Association, Dubuque Community School District, and Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque/Project HOPE.
