Port of Dubuque
Location
For hundreds of years, the Mississippi River has been a point of entry to the City and served as a opportunity for industry. Today the Port of Dubuque is once again a vibrant, thriving destination for business and industry as well as area residents and tourists alike.

The Port of Dubuque is a popular stop for many riverboat cruise lines including the famous Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen and American Queen. These excursions allow thousands of passengers to disembark each season to explore the Port and the community. The McGraw-Hill Companies recently completed a 140,000 square-foot, four-story office building that is home to nearly 400 employees. The America’s River Project spurred the redevelopment of Dubuque’s riverfront and is the only venture of its kind on the 2,400-mile stretch of the Mississippi River. The $188 million project was completed in 2003 with the opening of the Grand River Center, a state of the art convention complex. Phase II begins in 2007 with new development projects estimated to total an additional $200 million. In addition, some of the City’s largest employers are only blocks from the Port of Dubuque including: the Diamond Jo Casino (300 employees), McKesson (425 employees), Prudential (590 employees) and Eagle Window and Door (950 employees).

The Port of Dubuque has received many national honors, including a 2005 Phoenix Award for brownfields redevelopment. In 2006, the Port of Dubuque was cited in USA Today when it listed Dubuque as one of 10 Great Places to Discover Midwest Charm.

Historic Dubuque Star Brewery
The $6.5 million renovation of this historical landmark is being lead by the Port of Dubuque Development, LLC. The local group is reviving the historic building, turning the property into a mixed-use riverfront hot spot.

The Mississippi Riverwalk and the Star Brewery feature the Alliant Energy Amphitheater—a site for special events, music and live entertainment throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons.

Durango, Iowa-based Stone Cliff Winery became the brewery’s first tenant, turning about 10,000 square feet of the ground floor into an expanded winery and tasting room. The owners of a popular northwestern Illinois restaurant locked up the next lease to open an upscale restaurant on the building’s second floor. Negotiations are underway to convert the third and fourth floors into office space for another local company.

More than 10,000 square feet of space is configured for retail on the first floor. A public entrance and corridor will direct people through the retail storefronts and connect to a second hallway. This passage will be lined with historic Dubuque Star memorabilia and will provide access to the winery tasting room, the Mississippi River Walk and the Alliant Amphitheater.
